I am looking for possible Italian relatives in Ruoti, Italy(Basilicata/Potenza) and any other areas of Italy of the Francesco Santoro and Angela Maria Sardonio family and their three sons, (1) Rocco Santoro (born 1868 or 1849) married to Angela Pollito, (2)Vito Antonio Santoro (born 1870-1873) wife Maria Domenica Salinardi, (3)Antonio Santoro. My grandparents, Vito and Maria, arrived in the US with two children through Ellis Island on the Trojan Prince on January 7, 1899. They ultimately became parents to a total of twelve children one which was my Father, Frank Santoro. I have learned that Vito and Maria may have stayed in New Jersey with his brother Rocco for a time; however, they eventually moved to Buffalo, New York. Any help to verify this information and assistance to locate other members of the Santoro/Sardonio/Salinardi Italian family will be much appreciated. Thank you, Dianne
Hi Dianne,
I’m a Salinardi and my grandparents are from Ruoti. I’m as well from Italy, but I moved to California 3 years ago.
I wonder if Maria Domenica Salinardi was an ancestor of mine which would make us distantly related.
Thanks,
Mike
Hello Diane. My grandmother is Lucia Santoro. Daughter of Maddalena & Michele Santoro. My grandmother stayed with a cousin in buffalo prior to entering the United States. In the early 60’s we could possibly be related.
Lucia Santoro married Felice Spadola son of Domenico Antonio Spadola: my grandfather was telling me how he had uncles and family already in New York that we’re much older than him that he never met before. However my grandmother was brought into the us by staying with a cousin in Toronto Canada.
My grandfather was Angelo Spadola from Ruoti
My mother and father met at a family summer party in Waterbury Connecticut in 1930. My mother’s grandmother was Felicia Zarillo (I dont know Felicia’s maiden name, but one of her parents may have been a German. After Felicia’s husband passed, she remarried to a man named Scorpion(e?) while they were in Ruoti and emigrated to Waterbury. Mr. Scorpion’s daughter married a man named Rocco Meo, whom I believe was also a Ruoti. So my father’s mother and my mother’s father were both Ruoti people.
I’m planning to visit Ruoti in October of 2017 to research this. I will deeply appreciate any information you can give me. I believe the Rocco Meo (a barber) left Ruoti in about 1873. He was one of the earliest Italian settlers in Waterbury and in fact the state of Connecticut, which has the highest percentage of Italian Americans in the US, at 20 percent.
Grandfather was Vito Paterno Gabriele
He migrated to USA in 1912
I am looking for any records on him. He is listed as being from Touti
He was also my grandfather. He moved from Ruoti on a boat in 1912 with his little sister, There’s. He moved to Albuquerque and married Leisa Widmer. Haven’t seen you for decades, Richard.
Hello — looking for more information on great and great great grandfather Isaia Angelo Longhi and Felice Longhi. Both were from Ruoti, Isaia born in 1904 & immigrated to the US in the early 1920s. Any information or advice on where to start would be helpful.
Hi Ashton H.,
My grandfather Felice(Felix) DeCarlo had a sister named Ann Marie DeCarlo. Her husband’s name was Felix Longhi. They were from Ruoti, Italy. I don’t have any other information at this time. My grandfather came to America in 1906.
Hello Philip,
I just started using “Italian Side” and noticed your post from January 2019. I’m interested in Felice DeCarlo (or maybe DiCarlo). He was from Ruoti and married Maria Schiavone. Their daughter Caterina DeCarlo was my Great Grandmother. Caterina was born November 6, 1850, in Ruoti and died July 14, 1932, in Brooklyn, NY. Caterina was married to my Great Grandfather, Gerardo Sileo. Gerardo and Caterina came to New York from Naples in April 1898 with their five children. One of their children was my grandfather Antonio Sileo. Please let me know if this is the Felice DeCarlo in your family tree. Thank you for your time.
Albert
I am looking for Birthbay Records or Baptisom for Vincenzo Ciuffreda, from the town of Ruoti. He was born on December 23rd. 1887. He died on June 1948 in Bronx, New York. Daniel, Rocco, Josephine and Lena. Father name was Vito ciuffreda, Mother unknown. One brother remained in Italy his name was Domenico was born on August 14, 1899. He died on October 29th, 1988. Also I believed it was a sister named Immacolate she died on April 1st. 1986. Thank you
My 2nd great-grandfather was Vito Antonio Ciuffreda, born in Ruoti June 7, 1836. His children, that I know of, are Maria Teresa, Domenico, Angelo, Angela Marie, Rocco, Teresa, Anna, Gerardo, Mary, Philip, Nunziata, Michelangelo and Josephine – all born between 1867 and 1898.
Am interested in locating some information on my great grandfather–Gerardo Navagata born in August 1849 in Ruoti and died August 1919 in Brooklyn,NY. He immigrated to the US in 1875 with his wife (name not known) and one child named Michelangelo (born in 1874). I would like to have information and then visit Ruoti with my family.

My grandparents came from Routi and my grandmother’s name was Maria Claps – a very common surname in Potenza – made famous (infamous) by the disappearance and murder of Elisa Claps in 1993, as told in the book by Tobias Jones, “Death at the Alter”.
I am very curious about the origins of the un-Italian Claps surname. Does anyone know anything?
My grandfather, Louis (Luigi?) Triano, was born on October 26, 1886 in Ruoti, Potenza, Basilicata. I believe he immigrated to New York between 1889 and 1902. I understand his parents (my great grandparents) were named Angelo, circa 1865, and Angeline, after 1865. It is possible my grandfather was the child of an earlier marriage by Angelo and came to America on his own as a teenager. In America my grandfather married my grandmother Mary Mariano who was born in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania on January 29, 1890. Her parents, Rocco Mariano and Maria Spadola were born in Italy circa 1869 and 1875, respectively. I believe they were from the Potenza province. My grandparents were married in the United States circa 1918. I appreciate any information you are able to provide regarding my Italian roots and assist me in the building of my Family Tree.
My wife, my sister and I will be touring Italy for the first time in 2016 and plan to make a side trip from our scheduled tour to Ruoti. We would love to see where our family is from and those homes/places where they may have lived. Thank you so very much.
My Mother was also from Ruoti I remember her mentioning the names mariano and spadola I don’t think I can be of any help to you but I’m curious how you’re going to get to Ruoti, as I’m going as well, to Sicily then Ruoti but very hard to find transportation to get there.
My great grandparents,
Nicola and Carmela Sabia were born in Ruoti about 1875-18880. I understand they were of a branch of Sabia known as ‘Sabia Stozza’. Does anybody know what this means? I went to Ruoti in 1991 with a historian from Potenza by the name of Geraldo Salinardi.
Hi Frank. Do you know if Nicola had a brother named Rocco? My great-grandfather, Felice Vaccaro, had a sister named Angela. Angela and her husband, Angelo Sabia, had a son named Rocco Sabia that immigrated to Naugutuck, CT. I don’t know much else about him. I was searching the birth records from Ruoti online but they only went up to 1876.
I am looking for information on Felice Florio who we think was born in Ruoti, Italy about 1830-40. His wife was Agatha (?) Barbarita and she was born in the 1840s. They had at least 4 children whose names were: A Vito Florio, Angelina Florio, Rosa Florio, and Saverio or Savenis Florio.
If you have any information that could help us connect some dots, it would be most appreciated.
Thank you so much!
Cindy
My father, Rocco Anthony Mariano was born in Ruoti Jan. 27, 1909. His father was Guiseppi (spelling may be incorrect) Mariano (known in USA as Joseph) mother Vincenza Burnetti.
My family name is Zarrillo, and I understand that our ancestors originated from Ruoti. Two names I managed to discover are Fannie Zarrillo (Fannie Jarrillo) and her husband Rocco Zarrillo. Fannie Zarrillo was born in 1865 in Italy and emigrated to the United States in 1885. Do you have any information on either set of their parents?
Thank you for your time.
My grandfather was Gerardo Spadola, born in Ruoti on 23 April 1890. His mother was Angela Marie Sileo. I see there are a lot of Sileo’s still in Ruoti. I was always told that his father was Gugiemo Spadola, but on a birth cirtificate from his sister who was born in NY, it said his father’s name was Vito. My grandfather immigrated in 1895 to NY. Any birth information on him or his parents, I would love to find.
Thank you,
Elizabeth
My grandfather was Angelo Spadola and his father (my great grandfather) was Rocco Spadola from Ruoti. I would like to know if you were able to obtain any information from the Spadola side. Thank you.
Elizabeth,
Your grandfather was my grandfather’s (Frank) brother. Their father was Vito Antonio Spadola and was married to Angela Sileo. Vito arrived at Ellis Island 10/24/1894 aboard the ship Wieland. It departed from Naples. He returned to Italy and then back to New York 7/22/1902. Vito was born in 1868.
My grandfather is Frank Spadola. He is from Ruoti. He was born in 1883 and immigrated to the U.S. in 1901. He named one of his son’s Rocco. Any infor you have on his relatives from Ruoti, would be appreciated.
Patricia, My great grandfather was Rocco Spadola from Ruoti. I’d love knowing if you received any further info on relatives from Ruoti!
