Understanding Names and Spelling Variations
Historical passenger and emigration documents were often completed by officials who did not speak Italian. Names, surnames and Italian place names may therefore have been shortened, translated, misspelled or recorded according to their pronunciation.
A first name may appear only as an abbreviation, while a surname may contain different vowels, missing letters or anglicized spelling. Always compare the record with other documents before confirming a genealogical relationship.
