Genealogy in Faeto

If you search your ancestors in Faeto, Puglia, info about your Italian family are stored in the City Office archives or at the parishes.

In towns and villages of Puglia and in Foggia province registry offices were established in early 1800: it means that you could find information in Faeto registrar as of that date.

So, if your ancestors were in Faeto in the nineteenth or twentieth century, then you could try to contact the City Office of Faeto to know more.

Before to start your genealogy research in Faeto, we suggest you to read our tips for your search . They are useful to search in Puglia and in Faeto too.

In the next picture you can see the demographic trends in Faeto from the Italian Unification (1861).

It could be important to know if the last name you are investigating is a frequent surname in Faeto. As more your surname is common in Faeto, as more it could be difficult to find the right info about your ancestors in Faeto archives if you have not exact dates.
It could be useful for you to know that some of the most common surnames in Foggia province are:
Bisceglia, Bruno, Calabrese, Caputo, Ciavarella, Ciuffreda, Clemente, Conte, De Luca, De Santis, Delli Carri, D’Errico, Di Bari, Falcone, Ferrara, Fiore, Gentile, Giordano, Guerra, La Torre, Lauriola, Leone, Lombardi, Longo, Marino, Martino, Nardella, Notarangelo, Palmieri, Palumbo, Pellegrino, Piemontese, Prencipe, Quitadamo, Ricci, Rignanese, Rinaldi, Romano, Russo, Sacco, Santoro, Schiavone, Simone, Totaro, Troiano, Trotta, Valente, Villani.

Church archives in Foggia province may instead contain even older information, but they are far less accessible from abroad (and almost impossible by email).
Then,parishes send information not easily.

If you have the opportunity to visit Faeto and Foggia province, you could plan to investigate churches’ archives by yourself (or with us!), but from abroad is very difficult to obtain any result unless you find a reliable local help.

Another important source of information is the “Archivio di Stato” (National archive) in Bari.

In any case, never give up! Probably the distance from your country and Italy, some difficulties in understanding and in translation, could complicate your search but this should not discourage you.

It’s important to plan your activities to carry on with simple goals (eg. search for a single date of birth, the name of an ancestor, the date of a marriage, etc.)

I am planning a trip to Faeto and would like to know where to go to find ancestry records. I have seen a family teee for my maternal grandmother’s family all the way back to my Great, Great, Great . Great Grandparents , which lists Tommasco Cocca and Lucia Marella, both born about 1790. It appears they had a child, Fedelle Leonardo Cocca, born in 1802 (which would mean both of his parents were 12 years old when he was born ). The other set of GGGG Grandparents were Leonardo Ianelli and
Anna Maria Cavalieri, both born about 1790. Other surnames on the tree include Stellabotte and Agriesti.

Would there be an office in Faeto where I could look up the birth, marriage, and death records?

    • Maryellen says:

My father came to the United States on July 3, 1922. My grandfather went back and forth to the United States. He was in the United States from 1894 to 1908 and again from 1914 to 1959, which is the year he died. In 1922 my grandfather brought his family to the United States, which included his wife Rosina, and sons John and Michael

My husband’s great-grandfather, Fedele Mastri, was born in Faeto, Foggia on May 29, 1851. We believe his wife’s name was Mariangela Capozzi, born about 1851, also from Faeto, Foggia. They had two sons: Antonio Prospero Mastri, born July 18, 1883 in Faeto, and Giovanni Fedele Mastri, born January 28, 1886 in Faeto, Foggia. Giovanni Fedele Mastri is my husband’s grandfather.

The elder Fedele Mastri was killed in 1886; both of his sons and their mother emigrated to the United States sometime around 1906, and settled in Coraopolis, Pennsylvania.
