  1. Hi Mike.

Only just returned to this site and saw your post. Thanks for your response.

I think my great grandfather and great grandmother arrived separately in Leeds. They married there on 25th April 1895.

They moved to Edinburgh and ended up in the Poorhouse in Leith where my great grandmother died with her youngest child in 1908.

The family then moved to Dundee, possibly to an uncle or cousin called Francesco Yannetta. He was a confectioner and lived with his son Domenico.

From Dundee they moved to Glasgow and settled in the Anderson area, where my great grandfather Gabriel died in 1945.

I’m still not sure if they originated in Belmonte Costello but I’ve recently confirmed through DNA that the family does come from the region of Lazio.

Much more research still needed I’m afraid.

    1. Hi Davina,

Just a side note, but the surname Yanetta would either be Iannetta or Janetta, more likely the latter. Iannetta (pronounce yanetta) is one of the main surnames in Belmonte Castello and I believe Janetta is a branch of the Ianettas. Theres a story that a Scots-Italian opened up an ice cream shop and asked for a sign called Janettas but it was misspelt Yanettas so they’ve stuck with it.

  2. My great grandfather was called Gabriele Iannetta, born around 1871. I think he came over to Leeds around 1890 and then settled in Scotland in 1905. He may have come from the Lazio area and I’m trying to find out if he was born in Belmonte Castello. From his death certificate I have his father’s name as Dominico Iannetta and his mother as Johanna ( or possibly Giovanna) Achee. I can find no trace of him before 1895, when he was married in Leeds to my great grandmother Philomena Fusco, and no trace of his parents in the UK at all. Any information linking him to this area would be great.

    1. Davina

My Grandfather was Rizza and his mother was Ianetta; he came with his brother to Scotland in 1907 + and I wonder where your relative settled in Scotland. Interesting !

  3. Domenico Rizza and Gelsomino Rizza with mother surname Ianetta who moved to Scotland Buckie before 1914 from Belmonte as children. Founded an Ice Cream firm in Scotland
Lots of information from Scotland but nothing on family from Italy

  4. Hi Fred, I’ve not checked this site for a while so I apologise for delay. Thanks for your comment. My Mum was Yolanda Vettriano Fallone. I never knew what happened between my grandparents, my gran didn’t speak of it and I always thought that Norah was my Mum’s half sister. My Mum did spend some time in Glasgow and she mentioned her family there, in particular, Rose. I have a photo of Rose with her sons. Mum brought me to Glasgow for a visit when I was about 2yrs old but I don ‘t remember it. I vaguely remember your Mum who we called Aunt Phyllis, she would occasionally bring some material as Mum was a keen dressmaker. I think also Aunt Carmella but it was mainly Aunt Guilia who visited and kept in touch. The last time I saw her was at my sister Mariette’s wedding which was a while ago now. I had been in contact about 3 years ago with Michael Fallone who lives in Dundee but not heard anything for a while. He did create a photo album which was great to see and I provided some photos. Michael also sent me a photo of a family group taken at his Dad’s 75th birthday and I was surprised to find how similar Elaine Fallone and I are. It would be nice to hear from you again and any other family who would care to contact.

    1. Lorraine I noticed you mentioned the name Vettraino. I am looking for information on Anna Maria Vettraino mother of Domenico Antonio Di Tomasso she was from Belmonte Castello. Domenico came to the UK

      1. Hi Lesley,

Unfortunately I don’t have any information on Anna Maria Vettraino. I only know that my great grandmother was Carolina Vettraino and she married my great grandfather Michele Fallone on 17th April 1904 in Belmonte Castello and ther son Antonio was my grandfather. I do know that he brother’s name was Dominico. I wonder if Anna and Carolina were related.

        1. Hi Lorraine, my grandfather was Ludovico Fallone born in Belmonte Castello 1886 and emigrated to Scotland in the 1920s. He was married to my grandmother Giovanna Valente. Is there a connection with your family? Regards Gillian

          1. Hi Gillian, Unfortunately I’m not able to confirm a connection. I think my great grandfather Michel Fallone had a sister Andreana and a brother Giovanni there might have been more. There also seems to be a connection with the surname Capaldi. Good luck with your search. Lorraine

          2. Hi do you have any further information on this as I’m connected by marriage to this family. Please email me if you can.

            Kind Regards

  5. I am searching for the marriage record of Carolina Rizza and Michele DiCicco. She was born 1854 in Belmonte Castello and he in Sant’Elia Fiumerapido. I’ve searched the films but 1878 is too recent for the films at the Family History Center for Belmonte, and I’ve not found it in Sant’Elia. What would you suggest?

    1. Hi Laurie !!! when I saw your message, I was surprised.I live in France but my relatives are from Belmonte Castello & Sant’elia Fr .Ihave some datas about Michele DiCicco . Born 25-2-1855 ,married 27-10-1878 whith Pirolli Carolina(19-2-1855/20-2-1930) .The father of Michele was Elio Dicicco & his mother Rizza Clementina . It’s strange , no ?? .Do you know the name of 1 or more sons of Michele & Carolina ???

      1. Hie Laurie ! After much time and some mistakes ,I discover a bitrh certificate of RIZZA Maria Carolina (born Belmt. Cast. 17/4/1854) . The most important is the annotation in the margin : Maria Carolina wedding with DiCicco Michele (from StElia) in Belmt Church . Sorry if the datas in the 1st message was partialy wrong (Pirolli it’s mistake)

  6. My great grandfather was Luigi Rizza, married to Yannetta Palma. They lived in Belmonte Castello . I have no other information about them other than their son, my grandfather, Giuseppe Rizza born 1878 came to Scotland and settled here. They may have had other children. If anyone has any information on them or maybe are family members I would be very interested in finding out more. Thank you.

    1. If what I know is right, Luigi & Palma had at least a 2nd son ,Clemente ,born in 1882 .Palma surname is “Iannetta” .The relatives of Clemente lives in Scotland yet .In few weeks I’ll go in Belmonte Castello ,I can check in City hall if they have the birth certificate as they have for Clemente

      1. Hi Luke, have not looked at this site for a while so didn’t realise you had posted a reply! Thank you for the information. I thought there might be more relatives out there. I have very little information as my parents separated when I was very young and the Italian side was not mentioned very much. I do know that my grandfather Giuseppe was married to a girl from Dundee and they owed a cafe in Pollokshaws road in Glasgow. They had 3 children, Alberto Giuseppe, my father, Louigi and Dorothy. I have another cousin who lives near Edinburgh that will be very interested in the information you have found. I will tell him about this site.
Yes, we are indeed related in some way!!!
PS. My grandson is also called Luke ☺

      2. Thank you Amerigo for taking the time to get the information.
Very interesting. That’s 2 brothers that I know of now that definitely settled in Scotland. According to Luke there were 4 brothers so we definitely have a lot of relatives. Maybe one day I’ll get to Belmonte Castello. However as I’ve been retired 9 years now it might have to be the grandchildren !! Will also pass on this information to another cousin who’s very interested in his Italian ancestors .

        1. Hello Diane, I am in the same situation (granfather, married, 3 sons,4 gransons) , but born Belmonte C. 10 August 1947 I live in France since1952 . I come back in Belmonte Cast. next month (octobor 2018) .I am searching my relatives ; in CityHall they have some documents (copy of originals destroyed in 1944 (WW2 battle of MonteCassino) . It intresting if you have some informations about the bithdate of your granparents. In same time i search for mine I can Watch for you ;Best regards

        3. Hello DIANA.

23/5/1865 born RIZZA Maria Irena Filomena . Father: RIZZA Luigi (born 11/6/1826), Mother :IANNETTA Palma Maria(born 4/8/1837).
With this dopcument I have also an other element ,Luigi was maried a first time (27/12/1857) with RIZZA MariaAnna but this woman death 3 month after (11/2/1858)
I think the 2nd marriage around 1862/64 but I dont have prouve of this
Is it , this , interesting for you?

    2. Hello, its quite strange how close in time you have posted as I have recently started to search my history myself.

I know some information that may help you, and in turn help me.

My grandmother, Meryl Rizza, had 4 brothers. Peter, Frank, Ronnie and Domenic. She was born 1933 and her Father was called Frank Rizza. We don’t have much information on her mother as she drowned in a boat accident.
My great grandfather, Frank, and what we know is he had a sister called Annie and a sister called Jessie, no idea if any brothers.

That’s basically all I know. My grandmother, Meryl, and her brothers were put into Nazerth house in Aberdeen after her mother’s death and she stayed there from the age of 2-27 so there is a big gap.

I have no question we are related and I can’t wait to hear more.

      1. Hi my name is Sonia from Toronto, Canada and my mother is Jesse Rizza.from Nairn Scotland. She had three sisters, the eldest Mary Capaldi who lived in Leith,Edinburgh, Flo Burke who lived in Toronto, Canada, and Anne who lived in London, England . They had an older brother named Frank Rizza who I believe lived on Edith road. They were orphaned at a young age and were put in Nazareth House, Aberdeen. My grandfather was named Secondino so I think we are definitely related. They hailed from Belmonte and my grandmother’s maiden name was Janetta. I only found out about the orphanage about ten years ago and that our grandmother had not died but she was put in an asylum after suffering from what might have been postpartum depression. The Rizza children all thought that she had died. We are still learning about the family history. I would love to communicate with you

        1. HI Sonia,

I have not found a link to the females you mentioned but deffinaltey a frank and secondino. Secondino’s parents were Luigi Rizza and Palma Iannetta (possibly J).

My grandmother, Meryl Rizza, daughter of Frank, was placed into an Asylum when she left Nazareth and her brother who was also called Frank took her out and brought her to Preston, where we have stayed ever since.

        2. Hi Sonia,

I’ve spoken to my mother and she recalls her mother speaking about an Auntie Annie and auntie Mary who resided ins Scotland. She also recalls one of her aunties moved to Canada which I assume is your mother.

I would love to share some family pictures with you to see if we have a resemblance.

    3. Hi Diane,

      So I found out more.

My Great Grandfather was Secondino Rizza, Son of Luigi Rizza and Palma Janetta (That’s the order in which I found it). Secondino had brothers Giuseppe, Francesco and Domenico.

      We are truly related.

      1. Hi Luke. Sorry I’ve not been in touch. Not looked at the site for a while. Just wondering, do you have any idea when your great grandfather, my grandfather, came to Scotland and his brothers for that matter. My nephew is very interested on getting more information but we are struggling with dates of birth and when they arrived in the UK. Yours in anticipation!

        1. Hi Diane,

It would have been my Great, grest grandfather Secondino Rizza. Born 1886 and died 1927. I believe he came to Scotland in either 1902-04.

    4. I’m interested in your family’s history my name is Enrico Rizza my grandfather was tommaso Rizza he was married to Maria ionetta they lived in Belmonte Castello but also lived in Dundee my father was born in 1912 his name was Rocco Rizza
Would be interesting to know if there is any relation here

      1. My great grandfather was I believe born in Belmonte Castello and called Guiseppe. He was married to Celeste Maria Ianetta again from Belmonte Castello. Two of their sons Domenico and Gilsomino settled in the north of Scotland in early 1900,s. They became confectioners in Huntly, Lossiemouth and Ice cream manufacturers. Unfortunately we can not track and other members of the family, cousins or indeed any documents from Italy

        1. hello, did you ever manage to track your family down? there is a large ice cream company in Huntly: Rizzas. My grandmother (also Italian, from Belmonte Castello used to go and visit Mrs Rizza).

          1. Hi Anne,

Mike is the family who own Rizzas of Huntly. How are you related to the Rizza’s? I’d love to be able to connect us somehow.

      2. Hi Enrico, my great grandfather was Tommaso Antonio Rizza (1872-1960). He was married to Maria Civita Ianetta and they lived in Belmonte Castello but also lived in Dundee, my grand father was born in 1912 his name was Rocco Rizza (1912-1993).
It doesn’t get much closer than that, you must be an relative by a second marriage (Elizabeth “Whyte”)?

  7. My great grandparents were Michele Fallone and Carolina Fallone (Vettriano) married on 17th April 1904 in Belmonte Castello. One of their sons, Antonio Peter Fallone, was my grandfather. Any information of family still living in the area?

    1. Hi Lorraine – just noticed you mention my grandparents Michele and Carolina – also my Uncle Tony. My name is Fred Seaton – my mother is Filomena Fallone/Seaton. I know that Tony lived in Maybole and had 2 daughters – Yolanda and Norah ? That’s about it !!!

      1. Hi Fred,
Thanks for your reply, I don’t check very often sorry for delay. My Mum was Yolanda Vettriano Fallone and up until about 2/3years ago I wasn’t aware that Norah had the same Father I always thought she was a half sister. I have been in touch with Michael (Dundee) but not heard anything for a while though he did make up a family album and I sent a few additions. Your mum visited on a few occasions when I was a child, we called her Aunt Phyllis, normally bringing material with her as my mum loved dressmaking. I also remember meeting Aunt Carmella but it was Aunt Guillia who mainly kept in touch and she attended my sister Mariette’s wedding, I think that might be the last time I saw her. My Mum died suddenly after a heart attack on 16th April 1997.

      2. Lorraine Mackie

Hi Fred, re my last message from August 2018. Do you think anyone from the family would be interested in meeting up at some point. Chat about any info that we have and show photos?.

  8. My great grandfather Giovanni Batista Rizza was born in Bellemonte Castello late 1800 and married Caterina Soave who was born in 1873. She had brother Rocco who had sons Paulo and Genaro. With my great grandfathers sons, Bernardo, Michealangio and Angelo came to Scotland. My grandfather Bernardo moved from Scotland to Ancoats Manchester after marrying Caterina Lucciano.

    1. Hi! We share ancestors in Giovanni Battiste Rizza and Caterine Soave! Their daughter Maria Carolina Rizza married Michele DiCicco, and she and most of their children settled in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania by around 1900.

      1. Hi just picked this up, thank you for the information which is news to me. My great grandfather Giovanni Batista Rizza married Caterina Soave they had three sons Michaelangelo, Angelo and Bernardo my grandfather. I believe Caterinas brother was Rocco and had two sons who came to Manchester, Paulo and Genaro. My grandmother Caterina who lived in Scotland married a. Loreto Palumbo who was murdered a year later in 1890. She remarried to Angelo Rizza who died then married his brother, my grandfather Bernardo Rizza. They moved to Ancoats Manchester Little Italy and had 8 children plus Carmino Luciano from her first husband ex. There name were Philomena, Andrea, Lucia and Salvotoria twins Bendetta, Teresa my mother and Giovanni. They have all passed away. I have lots of information many thanks for informing me of another link I did not know my great grandfather had also a daughter. So who are you to me?

  9. From my mothers UK birth certificate, I believe my grandfather, Erasmus Giannandrea, was born in Belmonte Castello in 1858. Some years ago I visited BC and found the council records had been lost for that period – possibly due to an earthquake. I’m planning to visit again next month, and hope to see if there are records at the church. Are you able to help with names and contact details of someone to contact? I believe he migrated to South Shields in northern England with his wife Domenica in the 1880’s.
Best wishes and thanks in advance.

    1. Sory Jeff, I can said you ,Church in Belmonte Cast. ,the last earthquake damaged this monument 8 years ago.
Now a priest come from Terelle making the mass in “Capella San Rocco” but I don’t know when.
I’ll go to Belmonte Cast -La Scarpatosta- 2nd half of octobre ;I try to know more, some Giannandrea are yet there

      1. There are very few Giannandrea’s in BC left as most were relatives of mine but there are still a good number in the Stirling area in Scotland where I live at present. There are also a number in Canada, again relations, who have been there for as long as I can remember. Belmonte is a beautiful place and have been there several times but as there are only a very small number of relatives left, some I have never met, I have not been there for about 10 years

    2. Hi Bernard,

I’m sorry, I haven’t been on here in some time. Giovanni Battista Rizza and Caterina Soave are my 3rd great grandparents.

    3. Hi Jeff
Im joanne from South Shields (I believe the spelling of the name was altered in translation and documented as it sounded) I bought a book called ‘out of Italy’ and it stated the origins of my surname as BC. From my research my great great grandad came to the North East in the late 1800. I think it was 3 brothers together. My understanding is one more to Scotland.
I believe my great great grandad was Thomas.
Im recalling this from my memories of ancestry research, which I now realise was made more difficult due to the incorrect spelling, this is maybe why you havnt found the link in South Shields.
Id love hear back from you. I’m hoping to go to BC next year to explore our history further!

  10. With the piece of informations I have ,the Maria father’s was Grossi Fancesco .But this man maried 2 times;he had 3 sons with a first one(I am not sure the name Rosa X…) :Rocca,Fancesco and Maria ,
He had 3 others sons with Rizza Maria Maglia:Angelina,Giovanni and Nascenzio
    Antonio had a brother Lucio
Nascenzo Grossi (1896/20/1/1981) leaves Italia to Scotland(Forfar-Angus)and maried with Colette Minghella.
I stop here Good bye , see you later
