Rionero in Vulture
(my grandparents)
Born December 27, 1885: Vincenzo Berardino (father Guiseppe Mickele Berardino; can’t read his mother’s name) – I have a copy of the Ufficio Dello Stato Civile but I can’t read the writing or the Italian.
Born August 28, 1893: Anna Larotonia/La Ritonda (sp?) – I have a copy of the Amministrazione Communlae but I can’t read the writing or the Italian.
Though Vincenzo came to the east coast of the US (Pittsburgh, PA?) earlier; he arranged to pay for Anna’s passage (Italy to the US) and they married sometime after September of 1912. They lived somewhere in the Pittsburgh area.
They had two children Maria Antoinette (born April 6, 1914) and Angiolina (born December 14, 1917) before he passed away.
Has anyone seen any of these names in their research? Thanks
the surname is Larotonda, I haven´t any Anna Larotonda in my tree
I have a Lucia Teresa Larotonda in my tree, but not certain of the birth date. One of her children, Antonio Donato (or Donato Antonio) Bitetti was born on 1/15/1881 if that helps.
Hello,
I am a Berardino from Pittsburgh, PA. My great-great grandfather was Francesco Berardino from Rionero in Vulture, born Sept. 1, 1861. I found his baptismal records in the Rionero film archives and his parents were Antonio Berardino and Carminella Caruso. I know that his brothers were Michele and Girardo, but I believe they were born in the 1850s. Are any of these names familiar? I read and speak Italian, so maybe I can help you with the documents.
Ciao tutti,
D’Adamo!
My Grandfather was Edmundo D’Adamo born in 1902 in Rionero. He sailed to Ellis Island on the Duca di Genova. He was 8 or 9 when he arrived in America and lived his whole life in the Bronx NY.
Grazie 😊
Any Pomarico’s out there whose ancestors came from Rionero In Vulture?
Looking for any information on Gerardo D’Alfonso born around 1886 in Rionero. He had a brother Raffaele born around 1882. There were possibly two more brothers, Mauro and Savino, but their trail in the United States ends with their arrival in New York. Both Gerardo and Raffaele named their first born Frank, so maybe their father was Francesco.
Also looking for information on Rosa Giammatteo born around 1883 in Rionero. Any help would be very appreciated.
Lorraine my great grandfather was Michele Giammatteo (his father was Girard and his mother was Irene Asquenino) and he was from Rionero. He married Lucia Sparenzella .They had a daughter named Rosa born 1906 in Italy. She was married to a Joe Grieco. Not sure if that is same Rosa you are looking for.My name is also Michele.
Michele,
Thank you so much for responding!! However, I do not believe your Rosa is my Rosa. I should have been more specific in my request. My Rosa Giammatteo was the wife of the Gerardo D’Alfonso that I’m researching. They are my husband’s Great Grandparents. I have found some records in Rionero but they end in 1860 and both of these individuals were born after that date. I’m hoping maybe they had siblings who also came to the US and someone out there is descended from them and maybe has some information. Do you know if your Great Grandfather had a sister named Rosa?
Lorraine,
The records are availble thru the LDS church up to 1929. Go to the catalog search and put in Rionero in Vulture. Rosa Giammatteo was born Jan 1883 in Rionero in Vulture, daughter of Vito Donato Giammatteo and Elisabetta Berardi. I could not find Gerardo’s birth record. But I did find his brother Raffiele’s birth record. He was born Sept 17, 1882 in Rionero in Vulture and was the son of Francesco (he was age 37) and Irene Grieco.
Gerardo and Rosa were married Nov 30, 1905 in Rionero in Vulture. Both of Gerardo’s parents are deseased at this time. Also Rosa’s father is deseased also.
Best resource I ever used was the book Italian Genealogical Records by Trafford R. Cole. Tons of useful information and explains many of the documents you will find. Hope this helps.
Hi,
My grandfather was Antonio D’Angelo, born 1865, and traveled to NY 1883. He came from Rionero in Vulture.
He was a skilled stone mason and did work on the NY public library lions and the Lincoln memorial in Washington DC.
I think he married Maria Antonia Fanuele here, but she may have come from Rionero or Sicily. The legend is that he loved her and followed her to America.
Unfortunately That’s all the info I have.
I haven’t posted in awhile but am hoping to find more information and would appreciate any help. Thank you!

My grandfathers name is Arcangelo Mecca from RioNero Vulture . born in 1896. He is somehow related to Raffaele and Filomena Nigro. He came to the US with them. and went to Stanford Conn. If anyone knows anything about the MECCA family ,please send me a reply. anything will be appreciated
Are you rock-solid accurate on that 1894 birth date? There wasn’t anyone by the name of Arcangelo Mecca born in Rionero in Vulture between 1895 through 1897. There was an Arcangelo Mecca born in 1894 though. His parents were listed as: Antonio Pasquale Mecca (born about 1864) and Giunditta Cardillo (born about 1868). There were many children by the name of Mecca born during these years so you would have to be more specific regarding info on the “Mecca family” since there were so many of them.
Looking for information on:
Donato Cardone, born Rionere In Vulture March 19, 1885
Teresa Cardone, born Rionere In Vulture, February 8, 1890
believe their father was Giovanni Cardone
Bob, I wish I could help you. My grandfather was Antonio Cardone, born in December 1896 (I have a copies of his birth records). His parents were Donato Cardone and Teresa Quinto – probably Teresa’s maiden name. Unfortunately, I don’t have any information on Donato or Teresa, but was hoping to find other children of theirs, because they would be my grandfather’s siblings. To the best of my knowledge, Antonio Cardone came to the US through the Port of Boston in April of 1913 – he would only have been about 14 years old, so I’m not sure that date is correct unless he came here with Antonio and Teresa. I planned to go to the National Archives in Boston, but haven’t gotten there yet. Please feel free to reach out to me.
Updated information. I counted incorrectly. My grandfather, Antonio Cardone (whose father was Donato Cardone) would have been 17 when he arrived in the US. Antonio’s father probably WAS Giovanni Cardone. Years ago I had a copy of a banner that had Giovanni’s name on it. I thought I saved it, but I have recently been unable to find it.
Donato Cardone was actually born on March 20, 1885, Rionero in Vulture. His father’s name: Giovanni Michele Cardone (born approx 1857), his mother’s name: Rosa Antonia Giampersia (born approx 1856). What is Teresa’s maiden name? She def was not born on that day.

We are looking for information on my grandfather, Vito Sofia who was born in 1874 in Rionero. He married Philomena(aka Florence) Viccarro and he immigrated to the US (Pittsburgh, PA) in 1909. Philomena gave birth to a daughter, Carmella in 1905 while still in Italy. Did Vito Sofia have any siblings? His father’s name is Lawrence. We don’t know his mother’s name. Any information we can learn about their lives would be wonderful!

Hello – I’ve been working on my Father’s genealogy for some time now. His Father was Gerardo Santoro, born in Rionero in Vulture in 1880, and he married Pasqualina Barrozino, who was born in 1882. I can’t find anything on Pasqualina, and every time I find a tidbit, the spelling of her maiden name is different. ANy information about either family would be greatly appreciated. We are coming to Italy in September and I have managed to plan on spending a day in Rionero. I would love to meet a family member, if that would be possible. Thanks so much. Elaine

We are hoping to find the birth certificate of our great grandmother, Filomena Nigro, who married Michele Bartolo (her first husband), possibly in Rionero. We believe her parents were Rafaelle Arcangelo Nigro and Rosa Maria Letizia.
We are also in search of my great grandfather, Filomena’s second husband, Michele S Marchese who was born maybe in Cosenza, Calabria, (maybe Aeri?) on September 18, 1879. We would like to find his birth certificate as well. His parents were Genaro Marchese and Carolina Benvenuto.

Her Father was Antonio Cima, borned in Rionero in 1841, who emigrated to Sao Paulo but returned in Rionero and died there. My grandmother Elena came to Argentina aprox in 1902 1903 and died in 1949. My grandfather was Giuseppe Recine and he was married to Carmela Libutti. both born in Rionero in Vulture. His father was Antonio Recine who was married to Rosa Mandredo. Antonio’ father was also Giuseppe and he was born about 1840. I do not have the record in front of me. I am told that the area was settled by French and Spanish after the wars for Italy in the 1500’s. I am also told that the name “Recine” is a surname that is very common in Frosinone, Italy, just a few miles away. any informaiotn would be appreciated.
There are a few Recines in San Fele, Potenza, Basilicata. Not a huge family there, but only 15 miles from Rionero
does anyone have any info on Francesco Pruonto (born October 1903 in Rionero to Michele Pr. and Teresa Restaino) married to Teresa Viggiano (born 1908 to Leonardo V and Caterina Grieco)in 1927? Did they immigrate to America? Did they stay in Rionero?? All of my records end before I can get any more info about them.
Hello Kate.
I believe Francesco Pruonto (deceased) and Teresa Viggiano are my mother’s aunt and uncle.
They never went to the U.S. as far as I know. They stayed in Rionero Invulture and had 7 boys. With the exception of two; ; they are still all living in Italy. It is possible that we are talking about the same people.
oh my goodness, I didn’t think anyone would ever respond to this! I hope we’re talking about the same person–I have Francesco’s birth and death dates as 23 Oct 1903 and 17th Dec 1977, if that helps.
I hope you’re doing well!
Hello!! I am trying to find out as much as I can about my ancestors. i have traced them back to Rionero in Vulture.
My Great Grandfather was born in Chicago. His name was Harry Asquine.
His parents were Rock/Rocky/Rocco and Anna Asquine who were from Chicago.
Rock’s parents were Nick/Nicola and Rose Asquino They changed their name to Asquine sometime after immigrating to Chicago in the early 1900s. They were both born in Rionero, Italy.
I think Nick’s parents were possibly named Pasquale and Raffaela Asquino but they were born in the early 1800s.
I believe Nick was born in Oct 1862. I believe his wife Rose was born in 1865 and that her parents were Rocco Marchetti and Maria (Pelletieri) Marchetti.
I am trying to find out for sure who Nick’s parents were and if he had any siblings and if they also moved to Chicago, Illinois, USA.
I believe Nick was born in Oct 1862. I believe his wife Rose was born in 1865 and that her parents were Rocco Marchetti and Maria (Pelletieri) Marchetti.
My g.grandfather was Michele Soriano born in Nusco 1860. His parents were Michele Suriano and Maria Asquino born 1869. Her parents were Michele Asquino born abt. 1840 in Rionero and his wife Rubina Pasquarella. Michele Asquino 1840, his parents were Cristofaro Asquino and Teresa DiSunno.
My family immigrated to NY and then NJ. Looking for family and also records for the above people.
My paternal grandfather was from Rionero; his mother was a Libutti and his father a Recine. They emigrated ca. 1906 via New York and Pennsylvania, settling in southern Illinois. I believe an Asquino married into the Libutti line. I will check with my father who has done a significant amount of genealogy research.
Kassie; My son found this site. Both of my grandparents were born in Rionero and migrated to the US in about 1905. My grandfather’s brother, Antonio Recine had a daughter who married into the Asquino family. Carmela is my second cousin and now living back in Rionero after retiring and living a number of years in Chicago.
Kassie,
I have a cousin in Rionero who lived in Chicago for many years and was married to a man named Asquino. She moved back to Italy after her husband’s death. If you want to give me your email, I can try to hook the two of you up. Who knows? Her husband might be related to your family.
I have a Lucia Asquino in my family tree. I do not know her birth date, but she had a child,Teresa Bitetti, on 10/26/1908
My grandfather was Luigi Marco Scatorchia born around 1890 in Rionero In Vulture. I would like to research his father and mother, there names and how many children they had. Any info is greatly appreciated.
I checked 1889 to 1891 and found birth record in Rionero (number 163) for a Marco Luigi Scatorchia who was born 29 March 1890 to Arcangelo Raffaele Scatorchia, age 28, occupation contadino (farmer) residing on via Processione # 40 and Vita Rosa Di Battista, age 28, occupation contadino (farmer).
Tony,
Thank you so much, now I know who my father was named after, Arcangelo. My grandfathers name was reversed when he came America .
Is there any chance to see how many children Archangelo had? There are so many Scatorchia’s still in the town.
Hi Lou,
Marriage, on March 20, 1884, Arcangelo Raffaele Scatorchia age 22, son of Francesco Scatorchia (deceased) and Lucia Mollica married Vita Rosa Di Battista, age 22, daughter of Luigi Di Battista and Concetta Libutti.
Here are their children’s births I found:
Birth, August 22, 1885 Maria Teresa Scatorchia
Birth, April 24, 1888 Maria Stella Scatorchia
Birth, March 29, 1890 Marco Luigi Scatorchia
Birth, September 17, 1892 Francesco Antonio Scatorchia
Birth, September 28, 1894 Maria Michele Scatorchia
Birth, April 8, 1897 Donato Scatorchia
Archangelo remains a popular name in the Libutti family.
How can I get in touch with any of there living relatives. They had 2 brothers who came to America, my grandfather Marco Luigi and Donato, I am home interested in traveling to Rinero to meet the family. Will wait to hear from you
Donato was my grandfather, died around 1932 in NYC.
Is that the same Donato Scatorchia that married Angela Di Battista? The Donato Scatorchia that I’m related to on my paternal grandfather’s side was born in Rionero in Vulture, Potenza, Italy on April 8, 1897. My Santoro and Di Battista family lines on my paternal grandfather’s side were from Rionero in Vulture, Potenza, Italy. My great-grandmother was Giovanna Di Battista and her parents were Michele Di Battista and Carmella Palazzo. My great-grandfather was Michele Santoro and his father was Angelo Santoro. My Palazzo’s, Santoro’s, and Di Battista’s were born in Rionero in Vulture, Potenza, Italy. I don’t know the parents of Michele Di Battista and Carmella Palazzo and I also don’t know the names of the parents of Angelo Santoro and his wife. However, I don’t know the name of Angelo Santoro’s spouse. My great-grandfather Michele Santoro was born in 1892 in Rionero in Vulture, Potenza, Italy. My great-grandmother Giovanna Di Battista was born in 1895 in Rionero in Vulture, Potenza, Italy.
Yes, Joseph my grandparents were Donato Scatorchia and Angela Rose DiBattista. Their children were Angelo, Rose, Carmella (Millie), Michelena (Florie), Domenick (my Dad), Daniel and Adeline. When my Uncle Angelo enrolled in school in NYC, the family name was changed from Scatorchia to Scatorchio by one of his teachers.
I am planning to go to the town either spring of 2023 or fall of 2023. There are a lot of Scatorchia’s there, with three sisters and one brother that stayed we should have plenty of relatives to meet
Hi Donna,
My best friend is the grandson of Donato and Angela. It is Adeline’s oldest son. He is going to Vulture in just a few days. Can I put u in touch with him?
Searching for relatives of Michele Asquino born 1840 and Rubina Pasquarella-I am a descendent of Michele Suriano 1860 of Nusco- I also have Lucia Traficante as a witness to the marriage of Michele Suriano and Maria Asquino in NYC 1888.
My great grandfather Michele Suriano was married in Italy to Filomena DiGiacomo who came to the US with him in 1886-I don’t know what happened to Filomena as my g. grandfather remarried Maria Asquino in 1888. Parents of Filomena DiGiacomo were Giovanni DiGiacomo and mother Maria Teresa Bocchere Traficante.

Hi Tony
I have just seen your message. Do you have any other informations or records. I can’t seem to find any myself. Do you have a list of birth dates for any of their children and also ancestors for either side.
I am trying to obtain information regarding my grandfather’s family. His name was Giuseppe Cicchiello born in Rionero in Vulture on 1/1/1895 and he came to the U.S. in 1929. He was married to Teresa Sileo and they came with their two children Antoinette and my father Antonio Vincenzo Cicchiello. My father was also born in Rionero on March 19, 1925. My grandfather’s parents were Antonio Cicchiello and Antoinetta Carnese both born in the mid 1800s. Any information would be greatly appreciated. I am trying to create a family tree but cannot find the information needed.

The Nardozza’s lived in Homewood Brushton on and around Frankstown Avenue.
The Cardone’s and Nardozza’s were related.

Dawn,
I would be happy to share/compare family information with you. My grandfather, Vincenzo, had two or three brothers who came to the US, and one sister who came to the US but returned to Rionero and another sister, Maria Carmela, who stayed in Rionero.
Hello. My employer is trying to establish his citizenship. His last name is Schifino. Great-great grandfather Leonardo is from Rionero, married to Madalena Traficante. Born 1868 and 1870. Need to get copies of both of their birth certificates and marriage certificate. Is there any way to get in touch with the commune in English, since I do not read Italian? Thank you so much for your help! jan~
Quick question, what is your employer’s great-great grandfather’s last name? Schifino? Also, do you know anything else about Madalena? My family is Traficante from Rionero, Michele Traficante born May 14, 1874. He came over in 1889/1890 to Pittsburgh, PA, and his family on down live here.
I am looking for records and relatives of my grandfather, Antonio D’Angelo. He was born in 1864 in Rionero, and came to New York in 1885. He had two sisters, one of whom, Ripalda returned to Rionero and married Pasquale D’Angelo, and they had two sons–Mark and Anthony. I would appreciate advice on locating records and relatives. Thank you.
I am looking for records of my husband’s great great grandfather, Giuseppe Dipace, probably born around 1850. His wife Maria Madalena Quinto and children moved to the state of Delaware in 1904, apparently after his death. Thank you and happy new year!
Giuseppe DiPace is my great grandfather. Have you had any response to your inquiry? BTW, my mother claims he died young; however, a book on Italians in Delaware states that “Joseph de Pace, who was in Wilmington in 1904 and later returned to Italy, was the father of Daniel De Pace…” My mother also said that he was raised by priests as an orphan.
My grandfather Daniel Dipace (later Depace) came to Delaware as a young man. He was one of 10 children and stayed with his brother Joe, I believe in around 1904. He was first a barber, but then with help from a sponsor went to the University of MD law school.
One of 10 children is very surprising! I have found 5: Nicola, Rosa, Teresa, Antonietta (my grandmother, Anna), and Donato (Daniel). The 1910 census has Daniel, Anna and her husband Michael Capaldi living with Nicola. If you have information on any other children, please advise. Thanks.
My last message, my grandfather was Michael Nicoletti
My grandmother was Teresa Nicoletti, who was your grandfather’s sister!!! They lived in Wilmington, DE; I currently live in PA. I’ve been trying to find out about Francesco and Carmella, and their other children, too, for years. Have you learned any more. We are cousins!!! Please respond and we can exchange emails!!!
Wow, what a small world. My 3rd great grandmother is Teresa Nicoletti, she married Giovanni Varlotta now spelled Varlotto. Sunda I am also in PA where there are a lot of Varlottos’. This is the furthest I have gotten back on my family tree. It is so difficult researching my Italian side.
Teresa Nicoletti and Giovanni Varlotta were also my 3rd great grandparents! Their daughter Carmela was my 2nd great grandmother. My grandparents left Rionero in the 1910’s and settled in Wilmington DE, where my dad and all his siblings and all the kids in my generation were born. My parents moved to MO in the late 60’s.
I believe I am eligible for Jure Sanguinis through my maternal grandfather Mario (Mauro Cecere) born in Rionero in Vulture, PZ on Jan 1 1914 who emigrated to the USA.
I wrote to the Uficio di Stato Civile and plan to call Monday. Any advice on contacting the Parishes or any other way to receive information?
I am trying ti find any records regarding Raffaele nigro and Emmanuela Boccichio who lived in Rioneri and came to the U.S.A. In 1914 with 2 children, Antonio and Luisa. Any thing about the family tree would be appreciated, including their parents and grandparents.
Thank you,
Christina Gurchik
Hi Christina,
I am Raffaele and Emmanuela’s great granddaughter. It has been really difficult to find information about them because of their last name. It can be found as Negro (as it is pronounced in Italian) and Negri (which it was changed to at some point before the late 40s.They settled in Altoona, PA. I was able to find both of their obituaries. Raffaele went by Ralph. His parents were Antonio Nigro and Louisa DeBamonda Nigro. Emmanuela went by Manuela. Her parents were Gaetano Boccochio and Filomena Russo.
That is all the information I have so far. If you have/find anything PLEASE let me know.
Thanks,
Dena
