My great grandmother Angelia (Lena) Varallo was born ca. November 1, 1863 in Marsicovetere. She married Carlo Antonio Tamburrino, born November 1858, from Vaglio di Basilicata. They emigrated to Chicago, Illinois, USA. This seems to be a somewhat uncommon name in Marsicovetere. As I scroll through the posts here from other families, many surnames are very familiar. Names like, Bove, Vita, Panella and especially Varallo. It seems many of you settled in America. My family came to Melbourne, Australia. Our surnames are as follows: My mum GENTILE and my papa TORRESI. We are also related to the PAOLINI family. I would love to come back to Marsicovetere, Villa D’ Agri and Viggiano.
Marsicovetere is certainly a place were my heart is. The mountain air is beautiful. My mum Francesca Maria Gentile (RIP) was born in 1933, Marsicovetere. Her parents were Gelsomina and Giuseppe Gentile. Papa Enrico Augusto Torresi (RIP) was born in Viggiano, and his parents were Umberto and Vincenza Torresi.
My great grand parents, John(Giambattisto) Bove and Maria Negri Bove immigrated to the US around 1895. I believe they were from Marsicovetere/ Villa d’Agri area. They settled in Philadelphia. I am trying to locate my maternal side origins. My great-grandfather Andrea Panella is believed to have lived in Mariscovetere Italy. He came to the US but I do not know when. I am also looking for HIS father, Pietro Panella. I believe he was born before civil records were started so I need to know which church or parish in Marsicovetere would have the records as I will visit there soon for this reason. My great grandfather was Giuseppe Barbino who immigrated to Chicago. He claimed that he was an orphan. It appears that he was raised by the Cortese family who lso came to Chicago. My Great Grandfather was a harpist. He married Caterina Viggiano. Do you have any record of Barbinos in Marsicovetere? I have hit the well when searching. Any help would be appreciated.
Interesting. Do you have dates, more info, full names, please? Was he raised by Cortese as a formal adopted family, or was a Cortese his padrone, as was mostly the case with child street musicians? Seems he may have been a foundling as opposed to an orphan, and parentage is thus unknown? My Marsicovetere man, also a child harpist, Francesco Domenico Bosco b. 1845, was a foundling. It’s a real cluster trying to track them foundlings. I’m trying the DNA route now. As I think what happened with my guy, for whom I could find no birth record in Marsicovetere though I know he was a child there, foundlings may be recorded in nearby town instead of where they were wet-nursed, fostered (or exploited!). I think my man may have been found in Viggiano as a baby, but not entirely sure.
Surname Viggiano in Marsicovetere: I can document my Viggiano family back to Giovanni Viggiano (b. abt 1756; d. 14 Mar 1826), married to Teresa Curcio (or Lacurcio). I have most/all of their children identified. Giovanni’s father was Orazio Viggiano, but I have no further info on Orazio or his wife and am hoping someone can help.
I am also tracking a number of other Viggiano families in Marsicovetere but cannot tie them together. They must be related to Orazio, either siblings or cousins. The oldest documented people are:

Bottomline question: who is the earliest common Viggiano ancestor who ties all of these families together? Are Orazio, Giuseppe, and Francesco brothers? If yes, who is their father?

Just found my mothers Philadelphia, Pa.Church Baptismal record…(In Latin.) I knew about her Father & his hometown in Italy. & even was able to go there….but now I have info on her Mother, (My grandmother) since my grandmother was very Quiet, I didn’t know much, wish I would have asked questions.
Her maiden name was Marieantonia Masino, from Marsicovetere (Potenza). From what I remember, her Family went from Italy to France, To Philadelphia. That’s all I know about her Family. She was a sweet Lady.The record I have is from 1909…..by then…she was married,; my mother was her 3rd child.

I am looking for a birth certificate for my greatgrandfather, Francis(?) “Frank” Antoine/Angelo CASSO who was born in Marsicovetere in September 1841, immigrated to the U.S. @1864, and died in Indiana, USA in July 1923. The sister you’re seeking may have married a Cianciarulo. It’s so easy for name spellings to get mangled after emigration. Of course she would have kept her own name for life while living in Italy. But after emigration she likely took her husband’s name.

I am looking for information on my great great grandfather Luigi Montano. He was a foundling, but showing in the birth register for 1820 in Marsicovetere. I found a duplicate birth certifate in his marriage documents in 1855, when he married Carmela Lauletta. His birth certificate indicates he was found in Viggiano, near the border of Viggiano and Marsicovetere.
I’m trying to find out who his adoptive parents were, where he really did come from, and anything at all about him. Without this information, I can’t determine any further information about my family.

Giacomantonio Fratantuono married Silvia Zottarelli. Their children were Chiara Rose, Maria Teresa, and Pietro. I have the birth record and marriage record for Chiara Rose. She married Francesco Dimondo in 1839 and document states that her father died prior to 1839.Also Maria Teresa married Angelantonio DiMondo on that same date in 1839. I found two Giacomantonio’s who passed away prior to that date one in 1831 and the other in 1837. I am unable to find a marriage record for Giacomantono and Silvia Zottarelli in order to determine which Giacomantonio is the right one. I also cannot find a death record for Silvia Zottarelli. One of the Giacomantonio death records states that his wife was Teresa Zottarelli.

My father Giovanni Panella was born in Marsicovetere in 1891. He immigrated to the United States on May 15, 1912 at the age of 21. His sponsor was Joe Pisano,
He married to Rose Marie Gallicchio from Calvello, Italy in Chicago, Illinois on October 23, 1923.
He came from a large family. His one brother was Angelo Panella, who also immigrated to the United States.

My Grandfather Giuseppe Varallo Came to America in 1902 with his wife Catarina I believe her maiden name is Borello.
My Great grand parents names are Francisco Varallo and Anna Varallo.

The Cortese relatives all came from Marsicovetere and many landed in Chicago. We are interested in finding information about Cortese, Lasca, and Russo. My husband’s grandfather was a performing harpist and violinist…his first wife was Teresa Russo. We would like to know the name of his father….Frank’s mother was Carolina Romangnano.
Patricia – My great great grandfather was a harpist named Bernardino Vita/Vito who settled in Chicago. In the 1880 census he lives in the home of a Russo family of musicians in Chicago. I wonder if this Russo family has anything to do with yours. Records of my Bernardino conflict as to birthplace – some say he was born in Italy, but two (his daughter’s birth record, and his death record) say he was born in France. I thought I had him pinned down as a Bernardino Vita I have an 1848 birth record for in Marsicovetere, where many of the travelling harpists come from, but there is also the possibility he was born in France. My grandfather Joseph Panella born March 19, 1876 in Marsciovetere left Italy in the 1890’s with his two brothers Matteo and John. His sister Rose and mother Antonia left Italy when the father died. They left Italy in the early 1900 before 1910. All the Panella family members came to Oakland, California. I am looking for any family members still living in Italy.

I do not have the answer to your question, but I am researching the family. My partner is the grandson of Nick Frantell, son of Frank Tranchitella or Tranckitella (sometimes spelled with a “F”). Frank died aboard the Eastland in 1915. Frank, his brother Mat, and a sister Mary Katerine immigrated with their parents. I have not found the ship as of yet. Frank, Mat(and his wife) and Paolo are all buried in Mt Carmel cemetery in Hillside, IL. I would be interested in sharing information.

My partner is John Flanagan, the grandson of Nick Frantell and Helen Czosek. His mother is Patricia Frantell. I have indications that M. Caterina Lauria (1875) was from Naples and is also buried @ Mt. Carmel Cemetery and was the person who purchased the burial plots. The family lived on Berwyn Ave. in Chicago. I have a copy of Frank and Caterina’s marriage certificate and many of their children’s birth certificates.
I believe it is Mariscovetere.
The Tranchitella Palazzo and Crypt are both in Mariscovetere.
The Palazzo is at the top of the town and the Cemetary is down the hill heading to Val De Agri.
The Crypt is well kept and the locals know the history of the Familly.(some interesting stories).
The Crypt has the coffins of Tranchitella and Russo plus others.
Other areas of this Cemetary have additional sites with both Tranchitella’s and Russo’s.
Viggiano was home to some Tranchitella’s and it is probable that some are buried there.
Look up the Palazzo you may find it interesting.
I was also told that a branch of Govt (historical) was updating it’s records (when I was there a few years ago).
