If your ancestors were from Basilicata, you might be intrigued to discover what your great-great-grandparents looked like and how they dressed in their daily lives. This article presents costumes from Stigliano, Avigliano, Tramutola, Moliterno, and more.

One of the most fascinating examples is the ceremonial dress of a peasant woman from Stigliano. This outfit includes a white shirt adorned with small embroidery at the collar and cuffs. Over this, she wears a brown bolero with gold galloons, paired with a wide, pleated brown wool skirt decorated with black velvet stripes. A black damask apron, white knitted stockings, and black high-heeled shoes complete the ensemble. The headpiece is a folded cloth covered with a brown cloth adorned with gold galloons, often topped with a crown of artificial flowers during processions. Gold and coral jewelry, including necklaces and earrings, enhance the ceremonial look.

Another striking example is the traditional dress of a married woman from Avigliano. She wears a white shirt with pintucks and San Gallo embroidery, paired with a blue velvet bustier and a small bolero jacket embroidered with beads and black sequins. A high red satin waistband and a thick, pleated wool skirt with spighetta embroidery add contrast. The ensemble includes a black damask apron, red wool stockings, and black shoes. Her hair is braided and topped with a stiffened linen cloth fixed with a gold pin, matching the apron. Large gold earrings and a gold necklace complete the outfit.

These costumes from Basilicata reflect the region’s rich cultural heritage through their intricate designs and meticulous craftsmanship. They provide a beautiful glimpse into the past, showcasing the elegance and tradition of Italian ancestry.
