Light and Shadow: Art Tourism in Naples (Part I)
October 25, 2014

If I could freeze a moment in time for Matera, it would be today, October 17th, 2014, when it was announced Matera would become the European Capital of Culture 2019.

Piazza San Giovanni was packed with people smiling and waving flags, their faces beaming with happiness and pride.
Thanks to ItalianSide.com I was able to watch this exciting moment on live streaming TV thousands of miles away in New Jersey.

I thought of my paternal grandfather and smiled—how proud he would be of his hometown.

Surely, he would be awed by the Matera of today—a vibrant, progressive city, rich with art and culture, which honors its past while embracing its future.

In the shining eyes of the people in the crowd I could see their optimism for and dedication to their town, which they know is a very special place.
As European Capital of Culture 2019, I have no doubt that Matera will shine as Italy’s southern jewel, ready to be discovered and appreciated for all she offers.
