So, if your ancestors were in Matrice in the nineteenth or twentieth century, then you could try to contact the City Office of Matrice to know more.

Before to start your genealogy research in Matrice, we suggest you to read our tips for your search . They are useful to search in Italy and in Matrice too.

In the next picture you can see the demographic trends in Matrice from the Italian Unification (1861).

It could be important to know if the last name you are investigating is a frequent surname in Matrice. As more your surname is common in Matrice, as more it could be difficult to find the right info about your ancestors in Matrice archives if you have not exact dates.
It could be useful for you to know that the most common surnames in Campobasso province are:
Battista, Calabrese, Caruso, Ciocca, D’Alessandro, D’Amico, D’Angelo, D’Aversa, De Santis, Di Biase, Di Domenico, Di Iorio, Di Paolo, Di Stefano, D’Onofrio, Fanelli, Felice, Florio, Greco, Iannetta, Lombardi, Mancini, Manes, Manocchio, Marinelli, Marino, Martino, Mastrangelo, Mignogna, Moffa, Niro, Occhionero, Palladino, Palmieri, Panichella, Pasquale, Perrella, Petrucci, Petti, Romano, Rossi, Russo, Salvatore, Santoro, Spina, Testa, Trivisonno, Venditti.

Church archives in Campobasso province may instead contain even older information, but they are far less accessible from abroad (and almost impossible by email).
Then,parishes send information not easily.

If you have the opportunity to visit Matrice and Campobasso province, you could plan to investigate churches’ archives by yourself, but from abroad is very difficult to obtain any result unless you find a reliable local help.

Another important source of information is the “Archivio di Stato” (National archive) in Campobasso.

In any case, never give up! Probably the distance from your country and Italy, some difficulties in understanding and in translation, could complicate your search but this should not discourage you.

It’s important to plan your activities to carry on with simple goals (eg. search for a single date of birth, the name of an ancestor, the date of a marriage, etc.)

My last name is Sivilla and my great grandfather lived in Campobaso before he came to America, his name was Givovani Sivilla and I see that Sivilla is not a common last name in the region. I’ve Spent so much time compiling family records from real life and the internet to find more and I actually just met a coworker with the last name Sivillo, roughly same age as me, and we feel we could be distantly related, plus it’s shocking to believe but his family is from the Matrice region as well as Campobaso, is there a possible relation of distant cousins or is this all one huge coincidence

    Hello,

I’m in search of my paternal grandparents Luigi Minnillo and his wife Elizabetta Cocco.

Also, my great grandparents Antonio Minnillo and his wife Caterina Pasquale.

My father Gino Minillo was born in Villa del Ferro, Vincenza, so at some point grandpa Luigi moved his family from Matrice to Vincenza.

In fact, he moved his family frequently…his first three children were born in Brazil. Then he went back to Italy. When my father was 7 years old they immigrated to Cleveland Ohio in 1916. Sometime before 1930 they went back to Italy.

Any information on my grand and great grand parents would be so appreciated.

    Thank you.
