Hidden Heritage in Basilicata: a "Masseria" in Matera

For our project Italian Hidden Heritage we selected near Matera a wonderful example of the architecture of the Southern Countryside: "la Masseria Sant'Eustachio alle Due Gravine".
A Masseria is an historical fortified farmhouse typical of Basilicata and Puglia countryside.
These big stone houses were tended to year-round by farmers and servants who typically occupied the ground floor, alongside farm animals. The upper floors were opened up only when the owners came to stay from the town.

Masseria "Sant'Eustachio alle Due Gravine"
At about 7 kilometers (4 miles) from Matera, there is the Masseria Sant'Eustachio alle due Gravine.
The Masseria is on the edge of Gravina river and is part of the Park of the Rupestrian Churches of Matera (Parco delle Chiese Rupestri del Materano). The Masseria, built in eight/nineteenth century, was recovered with a careful restoration work respecting the original materials and the colours of this historical building.
