Genealogy in Ischia

If you search your ancestors in Ischia, in the province of Napoli, Campania region, the documents about your Italian family are stored in the City Office archives and in the parishes in the town.

Civil Records in Ischia

In towns and villages of Campania and in Napoli province registry offices were established in 1809: it means that you could find your ancestors records in Ischia town hall archives as of that date.

(If your goal is to claim your Italian Dual Citizenship in Ischia follow this link).

So, if your ancestors lived in Ischia during the past centuries, then you should start your family research from the City Office of Ischia to know more: our local expert is ready to help you in your research!

Otherwise, if you think to contact the town hall by yourself, we suggest you to read our tips for your search. They are useful to search in Campania and of course in Ischia too!

Next picture shows the demographic trends in Ischia from the Italian Unification(1861).
This is a necessary info to understand how many people lived in the town in the past.
stats

To proceed faster with your research is important to know if the last name you are investigating is a frequent surname in Ischia. As more your surname is common, as more it could be difficult to find the right branch of your ancestors family in Ischia archives, expecially if you have not exact dates.
It could be useful for you to know that some of the most common surnames in Napoli province are:
Amato, Ambrosio, Annunziata, Ascione, Borrelli, Borriello, Capasso, Capuano, Castaldo, Cirillo, Coppola, Cozzolino, Cuomo, D’Angelo, De Falco, De Luca, De Martino, De Rosa, De Simone, Del Prete, Di Costanzo, Di Maio, Esposito, Ferrara, Ferraro, Fusco, Gallo, Gargiulo, Giordano, Guarino, Izzo, Liguori, Maresca, Marino, Napolitano, Pagano, Palumbo, Panico, Piccolo, Riccio, Romano, Ruggiero, Russo, Sannino, Scognamiglio, Sorrentino, Vitale, Vitiello.

Church Records in Ischia

Church archives in Napoli province may store even older information. You will find religious records of the same events (births, marriages and deaths) but, most important, you could go further back in time!
So in case you would like to go back in centuries, it’s good for you to know that the parish registers in Napoli started during 1500!

They are far less accessible from abroad (and even not easy to browse and to read if you are not used and skilled) but our local genealogist can research the church archives of Ischia on your behalf.

In case you want to visit churches, these are the addresses of parishes active today in Ischia:

S. MARIA DELLE GRAZIE IN S. PIETRO – Corso Vittorio Colonna

S. DOMENICO IN SS. ANNUNZIATA – Via Campagnano

S. CIRO M. – Via delle Terme, 152

S. MARIA DI PORTO SALVO – Via Iasolino, 2

GESU’ BUON PASTORE – Via Leonardo Mazzella

Anyway for our experience, even if you plan to come here, we always suggest to start the research months before the arrival: in this way you will avoid to waste time in the offices or in the churches dealing with italian bureaucracy and you will have more free time to visit the town and surroundings on your ancestors footsteps, starting from the info gathered by our genealogists.

Another important source of information are the notary documents available to expert researchers in the State Archives.

My father Daniel Ischia was born in Arco, Italy in 1921. Today there are a relatively large number of people with last name Ischia living in Arco and the Trentino region, and of course many scattered around the world. Do you have any idea of how the Ischia surname was derived? Did Ischia’s originally come from Isola d’Ischia? And then migrate? Did they get their names from a ruling lord in medieval or feudal times who had the Ischia surname?

I will be traveling on a cruise to Italy in September/October with one-day planned stop in Naples. Is there someone you know I could speak with who may have and be able to share any insights to this?

    Grazie!
    Dennis Ischia

    Hello,
I’m doing research for a friend. I already found her ancesters in the U.S. I’m trying to get info on the Mazzella family from Ischia. My friends Great grandparents came from Ischia. Porfirio Mazzella born abt.1878 (his father Nicola Mazzella)and Porfirio’s wife Maria Telese? born abt. 1883 (her father Francesco). They had all the children in New York City, first born was Filomena in 1911, also had Antonio 1912,Amalia 1917, Margherita 1921,Luigi 1922,Carlo. From what we know Maria Telese Mazzella moved back to Ischia (lived to be 94.Died around 1970’s) and so did Amalia,Luigi and Carlo.
The big mystery is Filomena Mazzella and her son (who is my friends father). We believe Filomena was married in Italy. She had a child Antonio Mazzella born 1941 Ischia. The father is uknown, apperantly he was a soldier and died during the war. The child Antonio was placed in a Orphenage in Pozzuoli Naples around 1946-7. His mother Filomena went back to NY to work. In 1952 he was out of the orphanage and travled to NY with his uncle Luigi Mazzella.
The family has heard the unkown father’s last name was probably Monzo. Any help or info would be greatly appreciated.
