If you know (or you think) that your ancestors were from Lago, you could find info about your Italian family at Registrar of Vital Statistics in the City Office or at the parishes.

Registry offices in Calabria and in Cosenza province were established in early 1800: it means that you could find information in Lago registrar as of that date.

So, if your ancestors were in Lago in the nineteenth or twentieth century, then you could try to contact the City Office of Lago to know more.

Before to start your genealogy research in Lago, we suggest you to read our tips for your search . They are useful to search in Italy and in Lago too.

In the next picture you can see the demographic trends in Lago from the Italian Unification (1861).

It could be important to know if the last name you are investigating is a frequent surname in Lago. As more your surname is common in Lago, as more it could be difficult to find the right info about your ancestors in Lago archives if you have not exact dates.
It could be useful for you to know that some of the most common surnames in Cosenza province are:
Aiello, Barone, Bruno, Caputo, Caruso, Chiappetta, De Luca, De Marco, De Rose, Esposito, Falcone, Ferraro, Filice, Fusaro, Gabriele, Gagliardi, Gallo, Garofalo, Gaudio, Gencarelli, Gentile, Giordano, Greco, Guido, Leone, Longo, Madeo, Marino, Martino, Mazzei, Morrone, Nicoletti, Nigro, Palermo, Perri, Perrone, Porco, Presta, Pugliese, Rizzo, Romano, Ruffolo, Russo, Salerno, Santoro, Spadafora, Sposato, Veltri.

Church archives in Cosenza province may instead contain even older information, but they are far less accessible from abroad (and almost impossible by email).
Then,parishes send information not easily.

If you have the opportunity to visit Lago and Cosenza province, you could plan to investigate churches’ archives by yourself, but from abroad is very difficult to obtain any result unless you find a reliable local help.

Another important source of information is the “Archivio di Stato” (National archive) in Reggio Calabria.

In any case, never give up! Probably the distance from your country and Italy, some difficulties in understanding and in translation, could complicate your search but this should not discourage you.

It’s important to plan your activities to carry on with simple goals (eg. search for a single date of birth, the name of an ancestor, the date of a marriage, etc.)

Hello, My name is Joni. I know my lineage back to 1816 all from Lago, all on my Abate side, I just have one problem. I know all my grand fathers names and my grandmothers names except for my great grandmother of all people. I know my great grandfather, his name was Domenico Marco Abate br: November 1849 Lago, Italy but do not know his wifes name. He moved to the United States and there is some confusion and loss of who she was? I know where he was born, where his father was born, who his father was and his mother just can’t find out anything about Domenico’s wife. Thanks so much. I plan to stend the summer of 2014 in Italy and would love to go visit Calabria, my daughter is learning Italian and we know so much about bothe sides just can’t find our missing lady. Once again Grazie Mille, Joni

      Ciao Joni,
we answered you by email but the answer bounced back.
The error reported is “Your mail could not be delivered because the

you received this in error, please contact the recipient directly and ask
them to check their email settings.”
We already worked on Lago records and I’m pretty sure we can find Domenico Marco Abate wife’s name.
So please contact us with another email address or give us the possibility to reach you by email.
