Genealogy in Ripacandida

If you know (or you think) that your ancestors were from Ripacandida, you could find info about your Italian family at Registrar of Vital Statistics in the City Office or at the parishes.

Registry offices in Basilicata and in Potenza province were established in early 1800: it means that you could find information in Ripacandida registrar as of that date.

So, if your ancestors were in Ripacandida in the nineteenth or twentieth century, then you could try to contact the City Office of Ripacandida to know more.

Before to start your genealogy research in Ripacandida, we suggest you to read our tips for your search . They are useful to search in Abruzzo and in Ripacandida too.

Next picture shows the demographic trends in Ripacandida from the Italian Unification (1861) an important info to understand how many people lived there in the past.

It could be important to know if the last name you are investigating is a frequent surname in Ripacandida. As more your surname is common in Ripacandida, as more it could be difficult to find the right info about your ancestors in Ripacandida archives if you have not exact dates.
It could be useful for you to know that the most common surnames in Potenza province are:
Albano, Bochicchio, Bruno, Calabrese, Caputo, Carlomagno, Carlucci, Cirigliano, Claps, Colangelo, Conte, Cosentino, Coviello, D’Andrea, De Bonis, De Luca, Ferrara, Fortunato, Genovese, Giordano, Grieco, Ielpo, Labanca, Lauria, Lombardi, Lorusso, Marino, Martino, Mecca, Nigro, Nolè, Pace, Pepe, Potenza, Rinaldi, Romaniello, Romano, Rosa, Russo, Sabia, Santarsiero, Santoro, Scavone, Sileo, Summa, Telesca, Vaccaro, Zaccagnino.

Church archives in Potenza province may instead contain even older information, but they are far less accessible from abroad (and almost impossible by email).
Then,parishes send information not easily.

If you have the opportunity to visit Ripacandida and Potenza province, you could plan to investigate churches’ archives by yourself, but from abroad is very difficult to obtain any result unless you find a reliable local help.
For our experience is better to start to search months before your arrival: in this way you will avoid to waste time in the offices and with italian bureaucracy and you will have more free time to visit the town and surroundings on your ancestors footsteps.

Another important source of information is the “Archivio di Stato” (National archive) in Potenza.

In any case, never give up! Probably the distance from your country and Italy, some difficulties in understanding and in translation, could complicate your search but this should not discourage you.

Hello! I would love some assistance locating my husband’s family! If anyone can help me that would be amazing because I am stuck! His great grandfather was RAFFAELE PARISI. Raffaele is from ripacandida and was born about 1890. He married Pasqualina Martino. In his obituary it states his parents names were Mary and Donato. His wife was father was Donato Martino and mother was Lucia Fusco. I would like to go further but like I said, I am stuck!

Fascinating how many residents of Ripacandida ended up in Altoona, PA. There is an Antonio Cerully in my family from Ripacandida. I think I found the right immigration record, and he came over on a ship from Naples to NY in 1901. There was also a Michele Cerullo from the same town headed to Altoona but we aren’t sure of relationship (sister, wife, cousin). There was also a Donato (can’t decipher last name) from Ripacandida heading to Altoona who was on the same ship (SS Karaminia).

Is anyone here related to these folks or have documentation of their relationships to each other?

    Thanks!

Both of my parents and their parents were born in Ripacandida. My paternal grandfather was Donato Lettieri who married Fedela Gioiosa. They had one child, my father, Antonio born on March 5, 1912. Donato entered WW1 after his wife died and my father was left with his grandmother. During the war, Donato met and married a French girl (Edith Mary Moyon) in 1919. They emigrated to Altoona, PA with Antonio around 1924. Antonio moved to Chicago around 1932 and met and married my mother, Rosa Maria D’Adamo in 1936. My maternal grandparents were Pasquale D’Adamo and Antoinette Ricciardella. I was not aware of any other relatives besides my grandfather’s family that lived in Altoona. But it’s possible were related somehow. I visited Ripacandida in 1976 with my parents and am hoping to go back with a couple of my daughters within the next year. Good luck.
