Before to start your genealogy research in Muro Lucano, we suggest you to read our tips for your search . They are useful to search in Italy and in Muro Lucano too.

In the next picture you can see the demographic trends in Muro Lucano from the Italian Unification (1861).

It could be important to know if the last name you are investigating is a frequent surname in Muro Lucano. As more your surname is common in Muro Lucano, as more it could be difficult to find the right info about your ancestors in Muro Lucano archives if you have not exact dates.
It could be useful for you to know that the most common surnames in Potenza province are:
Albano, Bochicchio, Bruno, Calabrese, Caputo, Carlomagno, Carlucci, Cirigliano, Claps, Colangelo, Conte, Cosentino, Coviello, D’Andrea, De Bonis, De Luca, Ferrara, Fortunato, Genovese, Giordano, Grieco, Ielpo, Labanca, Lauria, Lombardi, Lorusso, Marino, Martino, Mecca, Nigro, Nolè, Pace, Pepe, Potenza, Rinaldi, Romaniello, Romano, Rosa, Russo, Sabia, Santarsiero, Santoro, Scavone, Sileo, Summa, Telesca, Vaccaro, Zaccagnino.

Church archives in Potenza province may instead contain even older information, but they are far less accessible from abroad (and almost impossible by email).
Then,parishes send information not easily.

If you have the opportunity to visit Muro Lucano and Potenza province, you could plan to investigate churches’ archives by yourself, but from abroad is very difficult to obtain any result unless you find a reliable local help.

Another important source of information is the “Archivio di Stato” (National archive) in Potenza.

In any case, never give up! Probably the distance from your country and Italy, some difficulties in understanding and in translation, could complicate your search but this should not discourage you.

It’s important to plan your activities to carry on with simple goals (eg. search for a single date of birth, the name of an ancestor, the date of a marriage, etc.)

I had the pleasure of visiting Muro Lucano in October. I can’t explain how beautiful the area is. We went on the weekend so unfortunately the town office and the priest weren’t available. I did stop in the Marolda bakery and noticed the name Marolda and Cerrone are all over the town. The people we spoke with said you need more information to check your history as so many families are named Marolda. I’m hoping to head back in Sept. Ristorante Il Casereccio was an excellent choice, we were treated like family. I highly recommend it.

Hello, I’m looking for information on my great great parents, Francesco Zampino and wife Vincenza Ferrara (estimated birth years 1870). Francesco immigrated from Muro Lucano to New York in 1904 with son Vincenzo (born April 11th 1881 in Muro Lucano). Vincenza immigrated from Muro Lucano to New York in 1907 with son Domenic. I believe Vincenza had two brothers, one of which had sons Tom and Peter Ferrara, and also a daughter who married into the Ronzoni pasta family of New York. If anyone has any information regarding these people, or if you’re also searching for the same people, please reach out to me.

  6. Gary says:

My Scianna family originates from Bagheria, Sicily where I have my fraternal family names connected back to an Antonino di Xianni born in 1678 in Palermo. He had two sons, one was surnamed Scianna and the other ended up Scianda. I’ve been told that di Xianni is old latin and that the Italianized would be di Scianni or Discianni. I’ve also noticed that there are many discianni in Muro Lucano. I also have a rare Y-DNA haplogroup (G-M201). Is there anyone searching for this surname di Scianni or Discianni? I would like to communicate with someone with this surname if possible. Thanks,
    Gary Scianna

  7. Marion says:

My ancestor is from earlier days. He was probably born about 1831 or 1832. Somewhere in the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies. Can anyone find a record of a Francesco Scaringe /or Francisco Scorringi / or Francis Scaringi who left his home country by the age of 14 years?

Several English Ships were in the area of the Mediterranean back in those days. Two that came to New Zealand were the Philip Laing. Another was the Airedale. Francesco was said to have “jumped ship” but I have no facts about the name of any ship he may have been on. So my ancestor, a sailor, boatman, seaman, Master of Schooner in NZ, builder of punts,is something of a mystery. No parents ???

Hi my great great grandparents were both from Muro Lucano. They are Maria Gerarda DiBella (born Feb 14, 1889) and Donato Fasciglione (born Aug 7, 1887). They came to the US separately in the early 1900s. I have different dates, could be anywhere from 1900-1910. They married in Manhattan, New York. Anyone know anything else about this family? 11. Dwight says:

My Great Grandfather and Great Grandfather, Antonio Spinaponte and Luisa Genuario, were married in Muro Lucano in 1890 and then immigrated to the US. Because they had both been married before and their spouses had died, they had to provide birth certicates for themselves and marriage and death records for their 1st spouses. Luisa was from Muro Lucano and I have been able to trace her line . Antonio was not and the marriage record I have says his parents names were not known. This record states that his birth records were submitted but they aren’t on-line. I believe they are in the Allegati records of 1890, which aren’t on-line. Does anyone have a suggestion about how I could obtain this birth record. Are these records in Muro Lucano or Potenza? Any further assistance would be very appreciated.

My grandmother was brought to the United States in 1906 by her Aunt Rosa and Uncle Felix Pagliuca – not sure of the spelling. I have the US census of her arrival. I have a copy of the 1910 Federal Senses of their arrival.

She married Guiseppi Martiotta in San Francisco in 1914. She had one child, Archangle (Archie) Margiotta, my father and died in 1930.

I wrote to the church in San Francisco that holds all of the previous records has not answered. I am visiting Italy in May 2016. I would love to visit Muro Lucano. Thank you.
