Before to start your genealogy research in Maratea, we suggest you to read our tips for your search . They are useful to search in Italy and in Maratea too.

In the next picture you can see the demographic trends in Maratea from the Italian Unification (1861).

It could be important to know if the last name you are investigating is a frequent surname in Maratea. As more your surname is common in Maratea, as more it could be difficult to find the right info about your ancestors in Maratea archives if you have not exact dates.
It could be useful for you to know that the most common surnames in Potenza province are:
Albano, Bochicchio, Bruno, Calabrese, Caputo, Carlomagno, Carlucci, Cirigliano, Claps, Colangelo, Conte, Cosentino, Coviello, D’Andrea, De Bonis, De Luca, Ferrara, Fortunato, Genovese, Giordano, Grieco, Ielpo, Labanca, Lauria, Lombardi, Lorusso, Marino, Martino, Mecca, Nigro, Nolè, Pace, Pepe, Potenza, Rinaldi, Romaniello, Romano, Rosa, Russo, Sabia, Santarsiero, Santoro, Scavone, Sileo, Summa, Telesca, Vaccaro, Zaccagnino.

Church archives in Potenza province may instead contain even older information, but they are far less accessible from abroad (and almost impossible by email).
Then,parishes send information not easily.

If you have the opportunity to visit Maratea and Potenza province, you could plan to investigate churches’ archives by yourself, but from abroad is very difficult to obtain any result unless you find a reliable local help.

Another important source of information is the “Archivio di Stato” (National archive) in Potenza.

In any case, never give up! Probably the distance from your country and Italy, some difficulties in understanding and in translation, could complicate your search but this should not discourage you.

It’s important to plan your activities to carry on with simple goals (eg. search for a single date of birth, the name of an ancestor, the date of a marriage, etc.)

Hello, I have traced my ancestry back to Maratea.I have found several records in in years 1809,1811,1813,1815,1817,1833. I am very interested in taking the next step to parish records in Maratea. Not sure where to begin any information would be helpful. Do you research parish records? if so can you give me an estimate. The one document from 1833 gives the church Chiesa Santa Maria Maggiore. Are there available parish records for that church? Thank you ..

I am doing some reserch for my husbands family. I am trying to verify the city or cities that his ancestors immigrated from. It has been mentioned that they came from the Basilicata region and possibly Potenza. However no one is completely sure.
We are trying to find records of birth, marriage or anything to help verify. So whatever you can provide would be a blessing to us. The relatives we are looking for are:

    1. Roace (Rocco) Covillo (Possibly changed from Coviello when immigrated to USA)
B-1845 in Italy D-Apr-1931 in Welby, CO.

    2. Catherine Covillo (Roace’s wife-married in 1865) B-1846 D-Nov. 1928
We think Roace & Catherine immigrated in either 1885 or 1890.
    3. Gerardo (Jerry) Covillo (Roace & Catherine’s son) B-Feb-19-1867 D-Jan 2-1947
    4. Angelina Covillo (Gerardos wife her maiden name-Capolungo) B-Aug-23-1873 D-Aug 10-1931 Gerardo & Angelina were married in 1890 or 1889. They immigrated in 1890.
