Today, may 4, in Naples started the “Giro d’Italia” 2013.
This is the 96th edition of the most famous Italian bycicle race: it was organized for the first time in 1909 by the Italian Sport Daily “La Gazzetta dello Sport“.
The race leader is awarded every day with the “maglia rosa“, a pink jersey.
Why pink ? Because pink is the paper color of the “La Gazzetta dello Sport”!
That’s why the “Giro d’Italia” is known as “corsa rosa” (pink race) too.
Today the road race stage was 130 km all around Naples.
The winner today was Mark Cavendish, the British racer.
So Cavendish is the first “maglia rosa” of the 2013 edition.
Tomorrow the second stage will be on the island of Ischia with a 17.4 km team time trial.
On may 26 the “Giro d’Italia” will end in Brescia after 3405km and only at that point we will know who will be the final winner of “la corsa rosa”.
The Giro d’Italia is another good way to see the beauty of many places in our country: small towns, countrysides, from Naples, the sea, the island, till the Alps and the mountains.
